For a limited time, The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art is (was?) running a virtual film festival called 'The Legacy of Satoshi Kon'.
"Who is that?", you ask? Well... that's an difficult question for me to answer. His works kinda' speak for themselves. Films like 'Millennium Actress' and 'Paprika', the short 'Magnetic Rose' from the 'Memories' anthology as well as the show 'Paranoia Agent' all have this wonderfully trippy visual vibe to them. Stories that not only play with a dream-like visual language but work with it in such a way as you start to question what's real and what's either a dream or a memory.
If anything, that's the legacy you see of his work State-side. Live-action films like 'Inception' draw some influence from Kon's work... while other films like 'Requiem for a Dream' and - to an possibly heavier extent - 'Black Swan' pull a Very Direct "Influence" from his works.
With this virtual film festival, I get to finally fill out my Kon Bingo card. I just recently got to watch a transferred-from-VHS copy of 'Perfect Blue' a couple of weeks back. Tonight, I watched 'Paprika' - Kon's last published film. I still need to watch 'Tokyo Godfathers' next as I've slept on that one for Years. Heard it was good but never got around to watching it. Thanks to this event, I can hopefully catch it without having to leave the website. = )
I'm not exactly sure how long these showing will last but I know it's worth the opportunity if you can get in on it. If anything, hit up the page and see what's there. You might not be able to watch them there but it is a fantastic list of solid anime to seek out on your own later. -> [Event LinkTastic!]
A quickie search found 'Millennium Actress' available for free on both Amazon Prime and through YouTube Movies. I believe the rest should be rentable from various places. If you were looking for a good starting point, you can't go wrong with that one. It's a beautiful piece of animation and a wonderful film to boot. = )
That said, I'm going to do just that. Again... not sure how long this event lasts as I Just heard about it about a day or two ago. These things are always short (for good reason). If you catch it, enjoy the shows. If you miss it, happy hunting!
Remember: Stay Safe. Wear a Mask. Get vaccinated if you can. Get a booster if you're already good on that.
'Till next time! = )
