Congrats for Starslip hitting 1000 strips!

I know, this isn't Biff-related news but it's still very cool news indeed. Kris Straub's long running strip Starslip (formerly Starslip Crisis) just hit the 1000 strip mark! = D

If you haven't stopped by in a bit, go check it out. Kris recently did a massive overhaul of both the drawing style and even a bit of the tech in the strip. So much so that he even changed up the title. Just ask anyone who runs a business - that's a very big and risky jump to make but it paid off for him. The new style rock just as much as the old style did and thensome. = )

It's a fun comic for fans of scifi and I highly recommend it. Drop by and show Straub some love!

The Process - Pencils

Email Me Prophet on Twitter Prophet on Bluesky -
Of all the parts of Biff that I do, the pencils always take the longest amount of time to do. This may seem like a very blanket, very obvious statement but it's the truth. It's also the most fun part of the job next to the writing. = )

Due to a fairly eventful weekend, I've gained a unique opportunity to show folks the process this step.

- Character Layout: The script really decides who goes where. It's pretty much an accepted idea that, for strips in the US, the layout is left to right with the first to talk on the left.

I don't exactly write to draw. That said, this leads to interesting "camera" tricks in some strips like "rotating around" the characters so they will be in the right positions for the next panel. This one is pretty much a straight forward one so any funky things I do with positions are, as the internet kids say, purely for the LOLs. = P

- Acting: My characters are always pretty stiff in their poses because most of my strips are really pretty simple. With two folks talking in a small space, I really can't afford to do anything too crazy with them. This forces me to make use of the hands and the facial expressions to add to the text. A joke that's funny on paper can be even better with the right expression on the character. = )

I'm still working on the pencils but I'll upload them to the SillyVamp dA account Scraps section with a longer write-up. For now, I'm going to keep plugging away on it. Back to work! = D
