Like many folks, I went and checked out the Watchmen last week. I promise this will be as spoiler free as I can manage.
Now, you may be asking why I waited this long to post on it. It's because I wasn't quite sure just what to write really. Like many comic folks, I have a history with this book. I found out about it back in High School. I worked at an arcade and was literally 1/8th of inch away from a first print issue one just sitting in a crane machine for a couple of years. Even back then I kinda' had an idea as to what this mini-series was about. I knew of it, it's history and that it sported the Doomsday Clock at five to midnight (which it has been set back to just recently). This was a Perfect Storm of geekiness that I wanted but never got.
Years later, I picked up the graphic novel. I kicked back and read it. Then I read it again to be sure I actually read what I read. To say I dug it is a bit of an understatement. When I found out that some folks were making headway on the film adaptation, I was both excited and nervous. Would it work? Would it be a cinematic pile of crap like Ghost Rider or Catwoman? Who's head will roll if this sucked?
Soon enough, I found out and saw the trailer and became happy again. I was still nervous but I was happy.
Flash to me walking out the the theater, pleased at what I saw. I understand completely why some folks were disappointed and why others have been expounding it's glorious arrival upon this bleak world. I understood the ending though, as many have heard already, it was changed. Wanted to see the original ending filmed but what I got was decent. Kinda' wished they would have done more with the background characters dropping hints to the world being on the brink of nuclear destruction. The last bit of fanboy-ness I would have liked to see would have been about five to ten minutes worth of extra film and added to Nite Owl II's depth. Outside of those things, they did a damn good job with what they had.
The movie makes for a nice companion piece to the book. Go pick up the Watchmen and read it before you hit the theaters. If you saw the film already, pick up the book. Any and all questions you have will be answered there. = )
