As you may have guessed from the bottom of the Links section, I love movies. I get a lot of good ideas while watching movies and I tend to hit up the theaters when I can. This flick is a strange case as I wanted to see it when it first came out but no place ran it. -.-
The movie is "Repo! The Genetic Opera". The title kinda' gives it away but yes, it is an opera. It a very Good opera set in a dystopic future where organ failures of all kind are common and a company - GeneCo. - comes to the rescue with their own designer replacement parts.
This leads to the other part of the title - "Repo!". GeneCo.'s founder gets the government to pass a bill allowing the repossession of GeneCo property. GeneCo has Repomen, state-sanctioned surgeons/assassins who will come and take your innards if you miss too many payments.
Now that the backstory is out of the way, the main story itself is a bit less dark than what is probably going through your mind. It's a really interesting tale of murder, deceit, revenge and hope. It really is a modern-day opera. I don't believe anything is spoken outside of a song and it works. The songs are great and the story itself has a nice pace to it. The director uses comic panels to give the audience the skinny on everyone's history. It seems like it would be a gimmick that would fail but it really works both as a way to drop non-song info and as a way to keep the feeling of a set change from a live show in the movie - a breather, so-to-speak.
I really dug this film. The visuals rocked, the songs worked and the violence and gore where there but not the main focus of the whole thing. Like any opera or play, violence was used as a story telling tool. Oddly enough, most folks I showed the box to noticed that it was produced by the same cats that did the Saw series. Probably not the best way to attract an audience. I know that, if I had not known it was done by someone else beforehand, I would have skipped it as I really don't like the Saw flicks.
"Repo! The Genetic Opera" is a good flick. Go pick it up. It's rated R but you probably could have guessed that from the review. = P
'Till next time!
