This may come as a surprise to many of you but I, in my previously employed life, used to build and maintain websites for folks. I mainly kept a directory up-to-date but I also built whole sites for customers. Being a Graphic Designer by degree, I was a one-stop shop. I knew more than enough HTML and CSS to get jobs done and working with the then new "Web 2.0" and I could make their images suck a little less.
Needless to say, I'm very much Not a person who makes websites for a living anymore or else this would've been out the door ages ago.
Anyhoo! After months of poking, prodding and more cups of coffee than I care to admit to... I present the updated 'Biff the Vampire' Website! = D
New things that I'm particularly happy about:
- This place looks different on Phones, Tablets and Desktops!
Seriously. Much of my time was spent making things look good on multiple screens sizes. And not like these automated site generators you see on TV (or online) that makes everything look like app and only looks good on a single engineer's iPhone. Nope! This place started as the usual Desktop-Only build that I always do. From there, I worked with that design to come up with something that worked on a smaller tablet screen size and effectively just rolled that into a better vers of the Biff app I used to have years ago for the phone view.
It was key that I at least attempted to gear things to how folks would use them on their assorted devices. It's been a thing I've wanted to do for a while and it's finally done.
- I killed the Google Ads!
I'm not going to lie and say I killed ALL my ads. You may not care for them and I totally get that. I use Ad Blockers, too. What I did was killed off the Google Ads I used to run (which never seemed to serve much beyond Ad Council stuff and terrible text-based junk) and filled those spots with more ComicAd and Comic Rocket spots.
Instead of useless junk, you'll see ads for other comics out there online. Which is the whole reason I keep those spots anyway. Everyplace is on fire. Where else can I find new stuff anymore? = )
- I made the existing CMS less janky!
I'm no programmer. Not by a long shot. It's the reason my unofficial title at my old job was Codemonkey. I can pound keys real good and, sometimes, I can get something that might work. In this case, I crash coursed my way through updating the PHP that runs this place by following the examples of the folks who Also crash coursed their way into making it in the first place.
I still have A Lot to fix but the important thing is that this updated version of the Biff Site is running on that updated code and not on stuff that was last touched in the early 00's.
- -- - -- ~ -- - -- -
I'm not going to pretend that this place is perfect. Far from it. This newspost is only this late because I found some new things I needed fix. That said... it's a far cry from the last version. Very little of that base code is left in this. I scraped all the old weird stuff out that, under the right circumstances, lead folks to rouge pages or worse. In its place, I added stuff that was written to current standards.
This really is as new a website as I could muster.
And with that, I'm out. Enjoy the new site, the new update and the new Story Bit to come. I have a few more cosmetic things to tweak before dawn. Maybe some more Gundam Breaker 4 if I'm feeling crafty. = P

'Till next time! = )
